When it comes to crazy pavers, there are a few options you can choose from. Available in various natural stones, crazy paving tends to be made from:
In addition to the different stones, there are various surfaces where crazy paving can come in. This includes natural split and machine cut. Natural split is when the natural stone in big blocks is manually split, usually by a sledgehammer. Machine cut is when the natural stones are sliced with a gangsaw by a predefined thickness.
The method of laying crazy paving is laying down broken down irregular shapes and sizes to create one complete path or area.
If you’re looking to do a DIY install for your crazy paving, follow these steps.
Prepare the concreted area: Prepare the concrete area where you will be installing the tiles. You need to remove the dust and debris on top. This can be done with a hose and broom or a pressure washer. Once cleaned, allow it to dry.
Prime the concrete: Apply an even coat of primer using a paint roller. If it is a smaller space, use a paintbrush.
Configure the pattern: Place the pavers down on the concrete to determine your pattern. Mix it up, using different shapes together. Fill in gaps with smaller pieces.
Tip: Start from the outside edges and work your way in. The corners should be flush against the edge of the path/area.
Apply the tile adhesive and lay the pavers: Prepare your tile adhesive, following manufacturer’s instructions. Working piece by piece, apply tile adhesive on the concrete and on the back of each paver before laying it. Once the adhesive has been applied, allow a minimum of 24 hours to dry.
Add the grout: Prepare the grout once all pavers have been applied and has dried. At an angle, apply the grout between the pavers and push into the gaps. It is best to use a grout float to avoid air bubbles.
Clean off excess grout from each paver using a sponge. Leave it to dry overnight.
Apply a sealer to the grout and tile: Apply a tile and grout sealer as the last step. Once applied, leave it to dry.
